Guided Zugspitze climbs, compared

Ten guide offices from Garmisch, Munich and Austria, thirty programs over four routes: the Höllental via ferrata and glacier, the long Reintal hike, the Stopselzieher from Ehrwald and the Jubiläumsgrat ridge. Most go up on foot and down on the cable car, and the ticket down is almost always extra.

Climb The Zugspitze yourself

Everything above is for hiring a guide. If you have the skills, this is what you need to do it on your own, free. Facts come from the summit’s own page on PeakSeeker, with sources.

Normal route
Reintal valley route from Garmisch-Partenkirchen (roughly 8-10 hours)
Grade
Moderate, non-technical hiking (no via-ferrata sections)
How long
8-10 hours
Best season
Late June-September for hiking routes; cable cars run year-round, weather permitting
Permits
No permit needed for hiking or the cable cars; the Höllental and Austrian Cirque approach routes cross glaciers and via-ferrata sections requiring crampons, ice axe, and via-ferrata gear.
Start from
Olympia-Skistadion / Reintal trailhead, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 2,428 ft (740 m)
Climb from there
7,290 ft (2,222 m) of ascent over 12 mi one way
Getting there
Most visitors ride one of three cable cars (from Eibsee or Garmisch in Germany, or Ehrwald in Austria) to the summit; hikers use the Reintal, Höllental, or Austrian Cirque trails instead. Nearest airport: Innsbruck Airport, Austria (about a 1-hour drive); Munich Airport, Germany is also commonly used (about a 1.5-hour drive)..
Hazards
A long, full-day hike with significant elevation gain; snowfields can persist into early summer near the top.
Gear
Crampons are needed for the Höllental route's glacier crossing even in summer; via-ferrata harness, sling, and helmet are needed for the Höllental and Austrian Cirque routes; full winter mountaineering gear is needed outside the May-October hiking season.

Read this before you pay a deposit

This is a cheap guided summit by Alps standards. Group Höllental days run €149–€280 a head, and even 1:1 Jubiläumsgrat days (€589–€839) cost less than a Matterhorn hut night with a Zermatt guide. Small Garmisch guide offices undercut the big brands: Berginstinct €149 vs DAV Summit Club €280 for the same route.

Read what's excluded. The €46 ride down is extra almost everywhere, and so are gorge entry, parking and the Höllentalangerhütte. DAV Summit Club adds lunch, rental gear and insurance, which narrows the gap.

Group size drives price. Höllental runs at 3–5 per guide, and a private guide costs €550–€750 flat. With 3 friends, booking a private guide can cost about the same per head as the group tour.

If you've never used crampons, the Höllental isn't a hike: it has a glacier, a bergschrund and a grade C ferrata, with 2,200 m of ascent. The Reintal (2 days with a hut night, €219–€329) or the Gatterl from Ehrwald (from €119) are the non-technical ways up.

The Jubiläumsgrat is 1:1 everywhere and needs UIAA III. Prices cluster at €650–€740 for a day, before about €60 of lifts.

We found no UK or US company running a guided Zugspitze summit; KE Adventure's Trans Tyrol Trek walks the Höllentalklamm but doesn't summit. Book a local school, and ask before you pay whether the school runs tours in English.
