Guided Matterhorn climbs, compared
Every guided Hörnli ridge program we could find from Zermatt, Chamonix, the US and the UK. Nobody takes an unknown client up it: you'll climb with your guide first, and your rock grade decides which trip will have you.

What kind of trip do you want?
Copied from each company’s own pages on Oct 19, 2026. Every “See dates” button opens the page we used. Where a page says which season a price is for, we show it. Prices are in each company’s own currency; sorting by price uses rough exchange rates. Prices change; the operator’s page wins if it disagrees with this one.

Climb The Matterhorn yourself
Everything above is for hiring a guide. If you have the skills, this is what you need to do it on your own, free. Facts come from the summit’s own page on PeakSeeker, with sources.
- Normal route
- Hörnli Ridge (Hörnligrat)
- Grade
- AD (Assez Difficile); UIAA II-III rock with fixed ropes
- How long
- 2 days overall; 6-10 hours round trip from the hut on summit day
- Best season
- Mid-July-mid-September
- Permits
- The Hörnli Hut caps its beds and is effectively booked in advance; most climbers also hire a certified mountain guide.
- Start from
- Hörnli Hut (Hörnlihütte), 10,696 ft (3,260 m)
- Climb from there
- 3,996 ft (1,218 m) of ascent
- Getting there
- Most climbers base out of Zermatt and take the cable car to Schwarzsee before hiking to the Hörnli Hut for a pre-dawn summit push. Nearest airport: Zurich (ZRH) or Geneva (GVA), each roughly 250 km / about 3.5-4 hours away by train via Visp; Sion Airport is geographically closer (~85 km) but has very limited scheduled commercial service..
- Hazards
- Rockfall dislodged by other climbers, bottlenecks near the Moseley Slab and Solvay Hut, fast-changing weather, and a long exposed descent that accounts for most fatalities.
- Gear
- Alpine rock kit — harness, helmet, and a via-ferrata-style lanyard for the fixed ropes, plus crampons and ice axe for the initial snow/glacier sections; most climbers hire a certified mountain guide.

Nobody sells the Hörnli to an unknown client: ZERMATTERS requires a prep tour first, and every package builds in 2–4 training days. Your rock grade is the real entry ticket. Chamex asks for French 5 on top-rope, the Compagnie des Guides for 4+, Alpine Ascents for 5.7 in boots.
Chamonix packages in euros (Compagnie des Guides €3,610 for 5 days) cost well under half of Alpine Ascents' $8,500 for 9 days. The US price buys hotels, more prep days and a fixed small-team schedule.
Hörnli hut beds open 1 April and the season is under three months. If you book with a Zermatt guide directly, reserve the hut that day.
The window is short (about mid-July to mid-September) and snow on the ridge stops attempts, so pick packages with spare days, like Jagged Globe's 3 days set aside for the climb, over 2-day one-shots.
- Hörnli hut (3,260 m) 2027 season: 25 June–20 September; online bed bookings open 1 April 2027. Online booking required up to 3 days before arrival; CHF 50 per person per night deposit by card. Guides and SAC members get CHF 10 off. hoernlihuette.ch ↗
- ZERMATTERS only sells the Matterhorn online after a preparatory tour with their guides (Breithorn traverse, Rimpfischhorn, Pollux or Riffelhorn), so the guide can judge whether you are ready. zermatters.ch ↗
- Hörnli ridge: mostly rock, 3b with sections of 4b, with fixed ropes; summit day is 10–12 hours of effort (ZERMATTERS quotes about 4 h up and 4 h down from the hut, starting about 04:00). chamonix-guides.com ↗
- Guided season on the Hörnli is roughly mid-July to mid-September, and the ridge must be clear of snow to climb at its normal grade. Crampons are usually needed above the Shoulder. jagged-globe.co.uk ↗
- Hut-side extras with ZERMATTERS: Hörnli hut half board for you and your guide from about CHF 150 per person, Zermatt–Schwarzsee train return about CHF 32, rental gear CHF 50–70. zermatters.ch ↗
