Guided Mont Blanc climbs, compared
Six companies, fourteen programs, from a one-day push for acclimatised climbers to nine-day courses that teach you crampons first. The guide matters less than the hut bed: no Goûter booking, no summit.

What kind of trip do you want?
Copied from each company’s own pages on Oct 19, 2026. Every “See dates” button opens the page we used. Where a page says which season a price is for, we show it. Prices are in each company’s own currency; sorting by price uses rough exchange rates. Prices change; the operator’s page wins if it disagrees with this one.

Climb Mont Blanc yourself
Everything above is for hiring a guide. If you have the skills, this is what you need to do it on your own, free. Facts come from the summit’s own page on PeakSeeker, with sources.
- Normal route
- Goûter Route (Voie Royale)
- Grade
- PD (Peu Difficile)
- How long
- 2 days
- Best season
- Late June-September (July-August busiest)
- Permits
- Since May 2019 a quota system limits climbers on the Goûter Route; an online reservation at the Tête Rousse or Goûter refuge is mandatory before parties are allowed through the Grand Couloir.
- Start from
- Nid d'Aigle (Tramway du Mont-Blanc upper terminus), 7,782 ft (2,372 m)
- Climb from there
- 7,990 ft (2,435 m) of ascent
- Getting there
- Most climbers base out of Chamonix or Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, riding the Tramway du Mont-Blanc to Nid d'Aigle before ascending via the Tête Rousse and Goûter refuges. Nearest airport: Geneva Airport (GVA), Switzerland, roughly 1 hour from Chamonix.
- Hazards
- The Grand Couloir ('Corridor of Death') below the Goûter hut is exposed to frequent rockfall and is the site of most fatalities on the mountain.
- Gear
- Crampons, ice axe, and glacier travel gear required; helmet strongly recommended for the Grand Couloir on the Goûter Route; roughly 20,000 people attempt the summit each year, with 10-20 deaths annually, mostly in the Goûter corridor.

The hut booking, not the guide, is the real constraint on the Goûter route: it is legally required, and the Compagnie des Guides was full for 2026. Book the moment next season opens, and ask any operator in writing whether your hut nights are confirmed.
Euro-priced Chamonix outfits (Compagnie des Guides €2,650 for 5 days, Chamex €3,350 for 6) cost less than half what US companies charge (Alpine Ascents $7,100 for 9 days), but the US trips include more training days and a Gran Paradiso warm-up.
If you have no crampon experience, the Compagnie des Guides Duo isn't open to you (minimum 2 crampon days). Pick a course that teaches skills first, such as Chamex Alpinist's, Mountain Madness School & Climb or Alpine Ascents.
Weather refunds are rare: Chamex gives none, the Compagnie des Guides substitutes a Plan B, and Jagged Globe offers 5% off a future course. Buy cancellation insurance.
- A Haute-Savoie prefectural order regulates the normal (Goûter) route: you must carry a named FFCAM hut reservation plus photo ID, and checks can happen anywhere on the route. Without a Goûter booking you may not continue beyond the Tête Rousse glacier. montblanc.ffcam.fr ↗
- Goûter bookings are nominative and non-transferable (name, date of birth, nationality and whether guided are required) and are held only until 5 p.m. on arrival day. montblanc.ffcam.fr ↗
- Hut beds are the bottleneck: the Compagnie des Guides says Tête Rousse and Goûter were fully booked for 2026 and later sign-ups went to a waitlist; Alpine Ascents waitlisted registrations after 1 Dec 2025 and may switch you to Monte Rosa if no hut is secured. chamonix-guides.com ↗
- The Goûter and Tête Rousse huts are unguarded from 3 Oct 2026 to May 2027 (advance booking still recommended, no warden or meals). The normal route was closed 26–29 May 2026 while the old Goûter hut was dismantled. montblanc.ffcam.fr ↗
- Summit day from Tête Rousse: about 2½ hours of rock scrambling (3rd–4th class, some exposure) through the Grand Couloir to the Goûter hut (3,835 m), then a long snow climb to 4,806 m. chamonix-guides.com ↗
