Guided Gran Paradiso climbs, compared
The classic first 4,000 m peak: a glacier walk with a short rocky summit, two days from Pont via the Vittorio Emanuele II or Chabod hut. Italian guide offices sell the bare two days for a few hundred euros; Chamonix and UK companies wrap it in transport, training days or a Mont Blanc attempt.

Copied from each company’s own pages on Oct 22, 2026. Every “See dates” button opens the page we used. Where a page says which season a price is for, we show it. Prices are in each company’s own currency; sorting by price uses rough exchange rates. Prices change; the operator’s page wins if it disagrees with this one.

Climb Gran Paradiso yourself
Everything above is for hiring a guide. If you have the skills, this is what you need to do it on your own, free. Facts come from the summit’s own page on PeakSeeker, with sources.
- Normal route
- Normal Route from Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II
- Grade
- F+ (UIAA II on the short final rock/snow section to the true summit)
- How long
- 4-5 hours from the refuge to the summit
- Best season
- July-September
- Permits
- No climbing permit is required; overnight stays at Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II or Rifugio Chabod are recommended to be booked in advance.
- Start from
- Pont (Valsavarenche roadhead/parking, Gran Paradiso National Park), 6,398 ft (1,950 m)
- Climb from there
- 6,925 ft (2,111 m) of ascent over 6.2 mi one way
- Getting there
- Climbers typically base in Valsavarenche or Cogne in the Aosta Valley before hiking up to the Vittorio Emanuele II or Chabod refuges. Nearest airport: Turin Airport (Torino-Caselle), roughly 100 km from the Aosta Valley; the local Aosta Valley Airport has no scheduled commercial service.
- Hazards
- Crevasses on the glacier approach, exposure on the final rock/ice scramble, crowding on the narrow summit in peak season
- Gear
- Glacier-travel equipment (crampons, ice axe, rope, harness) is required for the glaciated approach, plus comfort with a short exposed scramble near the summit; a certified mountain guide is strongly recommended for the glacier sections.

Book the guide in Italy if you only want the mountain. Guide Courmayeur's group ascent is €270 a head and Cogne's 2023 rate was €210 each for four. Add roughly €60–67 a night for the hut and you have climbed a 4,000 m peak for about a third of what a Chamonix package costs.
Chamonix companies charge for the logistics: transport from Chamonix, hut nights and lifts. The Compagnie des Guides' €760 for 3 days includes two hut nights and transfers, which makes it the best-value all-in package. Chamex charges €1,090 and leaves out meals.
UK week-long courses (Jagged Globe £1,795, Adventure Peaks with no 2027 dates yet) are the ones that really take beginners: three or four training days before the summit, with hotels included. If you have never worn crampons, they are worth the extra money. The Compagnie des Guides asks for 3c rock or crampon skills, but Chamex and KE say novices with good fitness are fine.
Gran Paradiso is also the standard Mont Blanc warm-up, so it often comes free inside a Mont Blanc trip: Chamex €3,350, Alpine Ascents $7,100 and Jagged Globe's Italian route. If Mont Blanc is the real goal, buy that trip, not two.
Weather refunds are rare. Chamex gives none and the Compagnie des Guides swaps in a hut-walk Plan B. Italian guide fees cover the guide only, so ask who pays the hut if you turn back.
Spring ski ascents run from €640 (Chamex, 2 days) to £1,795 (Jagged Globe, a week of touring), but they all need solid off-piste skiing. The Chabod hut opens for skiers from 20 March.
- Rifugio Federico Chabod (2,750 m) 2026 opening: spring 20 March–10 May (plus weekends 14–17 May) for ski ascents, summer 28 May–20 September. Spring half board €60 for clients, €40 for guides. Book directly with the hut (+39 0165 95574). rifugiochabod.com ↗
- Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II is reachable only on foot, about 2 h 30 from Pont Valsavarenche (1,960 m). The hut's own site lists its season as June–September and takes bookings online; the regional tourism listing gives 120 beds and half board from €25 to €66.50 per person depending on room. rifugiovittorioemanuele.com ↗
- Hut half board is usually extra with Italian guide offices: Guide Alpine Courmayeur quotes about €66.50 at Vittorio Emanuele and €62 at Chabod, plus €40 for the guide's hut night shared among clients. guidecourmayeur.com ↗
- Gran Paradiso National Park was established on 3 December 1922 as Italy's first national park, from a royal hunting reserve declared in 1856 to save the ibex. It now covers 71,044 hectares, and the ibex population is close to 2,800. pngp.it ↗
- The normal route is a glacier climb with a short rocky section at the top. Summit day from the Chabod hut is about 1,320 m of ascent and descent over 10–11 hours (KE Adventure); Cogne's guides warn of a 12-hour day. keadventure.com ↗
