The Eiger is one of the most famous mountains in the Alps, less for its modest height than for its immense, nearly 1,800-metre north face — the 'Nordwand' — long regarded as the deadliest and most storied wall in European climbing history. It rises directly above Grindelwald and the Kleine Scheidegg railway, putting its legendary face on daily view to hikers and tourists riding the Jungfraubahn.
