Trans-Ili Alatau, near Almaty, Kazakhstan · Independent
Shymbulak (also transliterated Chimbulak) is Central Asia's largest ski resort, set in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains about 25 km south of Almaty, Kazakhstan. Skiing runs from the resort base up to Talgar Pass at roughly 3,200 m, reached via a modern gondola and chairlift network linked to the lower Medeu skating-rink complex. It has served as a Soviet- and Kazakh-era Olympic training center since the 1980s and remains the country's premier winter sports venue.
