Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

Naltar Ski Resort

Tucked into the Karakoram range roughly 40km northwest of Gilgit, Naltar is Pakistan's oldest ski area and the country's primary training ground for competitive alpine skiing. Operated by the Pakistan Air Force, which pioneered skiing here as snow-survival training for its aircrew, the resort sits at a base elevation near 2,870m and hosts Pakistan's national championships as well as international events like the Karakoram Alpine Ski Cup. Its single chairlift, installed in 2015, is a relatively recent upgrade at what was for decades a rope-tow-and-hike operation, and the modest 80m vertical drop reflects its role as a training and community facility rather than a big-mountain destination. Reaching Naltar Valley still requires a four-wheel-drive journey from Gilgit, keeping visitor numbers low and the atmosphere distinctly local and military-adjacent.
