Kangwon Province, North Korea
Masikryong is North Korea's only ski resort, built on Taehwa Peak roughly 20 km from the east-coast city of Wonsan in Kangwon Province. It was constructed in under a year by soldiers of the Korean People's Army and opened in December 2013 as a flagship project of Kim Jong-un's push to build a domestic tourism industry, reportedly costing over $35 million in its first phase. The resort has 9 trails, including a run of about 4.8 km, served by chairlifts, drag lifts, and a secondhand Austrian-built gondola reportedly acquired second-hand from Ischgl, Austria via a Chinese intermediary — a workaround for international sanctions restricting direct sales of ski equipment to North Korea. A 120-room twin-tower hotel with a pool, sauna, ice rink, and helipad sits at the base, and the resort has been marketed to the small number of foreign tourists permitted into the country, mainly through specialist tour operators. Access, current visitor numbers, and season-to-season operating status are difficult to verify independently given North Korea's restrictions on information and on foreign travel.
