Zakopane, Poland · Independent
Kasprowy Wierch, in the Tatra Mountains above Zakopane, is home to one of Europe's oldest aerial cable cars, built in 1935-36, and is Poland's highest ski area. A two-section tramway, along with two chairlifts, carries skiers from the Kuźnice base station (about 1,014m) up toward the 1,991m summit. Skiing here is expert-oriented, on steep routes through the Gąsienicowy and Goryczkowy cirques, and the pistes frequently close for avalanche risk even when the cable car itself keeps running.
