Arizona Snowbowl

Perched on the flanks of the San Francisco Peaks fifteen miles from downtown Flagstaff, Arizona Snowbowl is the desert Southwest's unlikely alpine outpost, spinning lifts since 1938 across a 2,300-foot vertical carved through ponderosa pine and aspen. A hybrid gondola added in 2020 and the six-person Grand Canyon Express have modernized what was once a scrappy little mountain, while snowmaking drawn from reclaimed water keeps the 777 skiable acres running through Arizona's fickle winters. It remains the state's only major ski destination — and one of its most contested landscapes, given the San Francisco Peaks' sacred standing to thirteen regional tribes.
