Appi Kogen Ski Resort

Appi Kogen, on the slopes of Mt. Maemori in Iwate Prefecture, is one of the largest ski resorts in the Tohoku region and has been ranked the best resort in Asia by CNN International, with the World Ski Awards naming it Japan's best resort in both 2022 and 2023. From a 500m base to a 1,328m summit — an 828m vertical drop — its 21 trails (roughly a third each easiest, intermediate, and most difficult) total over 40km of skiable terrain, including a 5.5km longest run, served by 16 lifts, among them two gondolas and three high-speed quads. Night skiing runs through the core December-to-early-May season, and the resort's beech forests and generally reliable Tohoku snowfall have made it a favorite with both Japanese families and international powder-seekers. Appi has been managed by Asia Gate Holdings since 2016, operating locally through Iwate Hotel and Resort Co., Ltd.
