Bighorn Mountains, Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming

Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area

Antelope Butte opened in 1960 and operated for 44 years before closing in 2004 when it became financially unviable. A local nonprofit, the Antelope Butte Foundation, formed in 2011, spent years fundraising and acquired the lifts, lodge, and shop in 2016, and reopened the area to skiers in 2018 -- a rare case of a fully community/volunteer-revived, nonprofit-owned ski area rather than a commercial resort.
