Ak-Bulak is a purpose-built ski resort in the Trans-Ili Alatau foothills about 40km east of Almaty, behind the town of Talgar, and serves as an accredited training base for Kazakhstani athletes. Its six trails cover 14km combined, spanning terrain from wide beginner runs to steep freeride lines with pitches up to 55 degrees, all fed by a 1,012m vertical drop between a 1,652m base and 2,664m summit. Five lifts — two chairlifts, a gondola, a rope tow, and a children's lift sourced from Austrian and Italian manufacturers — move skiers around the mountain, backed by artificial snowmaking for a more reliable season. It sits close enough to Almaty's larger and better-known Shymbulak resort to make for an easy regional comparison, but positions itself as a quieter, athlete-oriented alternative.
