Snow Mountain (Xueshan) is the second-highest peak in Taiwan, rising to 3,886 meters within Shei-Pa National Park along the border of Taichung's Heping District and Miaoli County's Tai'an Township — a separate mountain entirely from Yushan (Jade Mountain), Taiwan's highest peak. Known to Qing-era Westerners as Mount Sylvia and renamed Tsugitakayama ('Next-Highest Mountain') during the Japanese colonial period, it was first climbed in 1935. The standard route runs 10.9 km from the Wuling trailhead past two mountain huts, Chika Cabin and 369 Cabin, to the summit, and is typically hiked over two to three days rather than in a single push. On a clear day the peak is visible from hills near Taipei, and its upper slopes can carry snow and ice in winter, requiring microspikes even though the route involves no technical climbing. Access requires both a Shei-Pa National Park entry permit and a police mountain entry permit, the latter obtainable on-site at the Wuling entrance station.
