Wheeler Peak is the tallest independent mountain in Nevada and the centerpiece of remote Great Basin National Park, rising dramatically out of the high desert with one of the most topographically isolated summits in the contiguous United States. A well-graded summit trail switchbacks up through subalpine forest and past ancient bristlecone pines to a broad, windswept summit with sweeping views across the Snake Range and the Great Basin beyond. At its base sits a small cirque holding one of the southernmost glaciers (technically a rock glacier) in North America. It's a genuinely rewarding non-technical high-altitude hike, made memorable mostly by its sheer isolation from anywhere else.
