Wheeler Peak is the highest point in New Mexico, rising above Taos Ski Valley in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southernmost range of the Rocky Mountains. It is a broad, alpine tundra summit reached by an established non-technical trail system, making it one of the more accessible U.S. state highpoints despite its 13,000-foot elevation. The peak was renamed in 1950 for U.S. Army topographical engineer Major George M. Wheeler, replacing its earlier name, Taos Peak.
