Talgar Peak

Talgar Peak is the highest point of the Trans-Ili Alatau range, the dramatic wall of the northern Tian Shan that rises immediately south of Almaty. Its steep, ice-and-buttress-laced western face and the roughly 12 km-long Korzhenevsky Glacier on its southern flank make it a serious glaciated objective rather than a casual walk-up. First climbed in 1938 by a Soviet team from Stalinsk, it became the centerpiece of the 'Metallurg' (later 'Talgar') mountaineering camp that operated in the Middle Talgar River gorge from 1939 to around 1990, during which climbers established eleven distinct routes to the summit, some rated as difficult as 5B. Despite standing well over the psychologically significant 4,900 m mark and just an hour or two from a major city, Talgar Peak remains a relatively under-visited objective outside Central Asian and Russian mountaineering circles.

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
