Stawamus Chief (The Chief)

The Stawamus Chief is one of the largest granite monoliths in the world, a 100-million-year-old granodiorite formation carved into three distinct summits by glacial erosion. Its maintained backside hiking trail to the peaks is a popular, non-technical (though steep and strenuous) outing with fixed chains and ladders, while its sheer faces carry thousands of documented rock climbs, including the Grand Wall, that make Squamish one of the world's premier granite climbing destinations. It stands directly above the town of Squamish and Howe Sound, visible from the Sea-to-Sky Highway.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
