Spruce Knob

Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia and the highest summit in the Allegheny Mountains, rising to 4,863 feet (1,482 m) within the Monongahela National Forest. Rather than a dramatic peak, it is a gently rounded, whale-backed ridge whose summit features wind-flagged red spruce trees (krummholz), boulder fields, and a stone observation tower built in 1969. It sits within the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, the U.S. Forest Service's first national recreation area, established in 1965.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
