Sapitwa Peak is the highest point on the Mulanje Massif and the highest point in Malawi, rising abruptly from surrounding plains as an inselberg formed by magma intrusion roughly 130 million years ago. The massif's name in the local Yao/Chichewa tradition roughly translates to "don't go there," reflecting both its treacherous scrambling terrain and cultural stories about the mountain. David Livingstone was the first European to document the massif, in 1859, though the peak itself was first climbed decades later, in 1894.
