Browse all summitsPuy de Sancy is the highest point of the Massif Central and of France outside the Alps and Pyrenees, a remnant of a stratovolcano that has been extinct for roughly 220,000 years. It sits at the head of the Dordogne river's two source streams (the Dore and the Dogne), above the spa town of Mont-Dore. A cable car built in 1936 — the first in the Massif Central — carries visitors partway up, with an 864-step wooden staircase completing the ascent to the summit viewpoint.
