Popocatépetl ('Smoking Mountain' in Nahuatl) is Mexico's second-highest peak and one of North America's most active volcanoes, its near-perfect cone rising just 70 km southeast of Mexico City. Continuous fumarolic activity and periodic ash eruptions have kept it under constant monitoring since it reawakened from dormancy in December 1994. Together with its neighbor Iztaccíhuatl, it dominates the skyline of the Valley of Mexico and anchors the Iztaccíhuatl-Popocatépetl National Park.
