Piz Bernina is the highest peak in the Eastern Alps and the only Alpine 4,000er east of the Bernina Pass, marking the most easterly summit in the Alps to exceed 4,000 meters. Its summit lies on the Swiss side of the Switzerland–Italy border, and the whole massif is entirely glaciated, encircled by glaciers including the large Morteratsch Glacier. It is a genuine glacier mountaineering objective requiring crampons, rope, and glacier-travel skills, not a walk-up.
