Pikes Peak rises dramatically above the Great Plains at the edge of Colorado Springs, making it one of the most visually prominent mountains in North America despite being climbed by highway, cog railway, and marathon alike. It was named for explorer Zebulon Pike, who attempted but failed to reach its summit in 1806. The view from its top inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write 'America the Beautiful' in 1893.
