Ojos del Salado is the highest volcano on Earth and the second-highest peak in the Western and Southern Hemispheres, straddling the Chile–Argentina border in the hyper-arid Atacama Puna. Its dormant crater cradles what is believed to be the highest lake of any kind in the world, and its comparatively gentle scree slopes make it one of the most accessible 6,000m+ summits by mountaineering standards. Vehicle tracks reach remarkably high on its flanks, drawing both climbers and altitude-record-chasing drivers into the desolate, otherworldly terrain.
