Nevado del Ruiz

Nevado del Ruiz is an active, glacier-capped stratovolcano and the highest peak in Colombia's Central Cordillera, straddling Caldas and Tolima departments. It is infamous for the catastrophic 13 November 1985 eruption, whose meltwater lahars buried the town of Armero and killed roughly 25,000 people — one of the deadliest volcanic disasters in recorded history. The volcano remains active and closely monitored, and public access to the summit crater area has been closed since 2010 due to persistent elevated volcanic activity.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
