Browse all summitsNevado de Colima is the older, dormant twin of the Colima volcanic complex, an eroded, forested stratovolcano that towers over its younger, permanently smoking neighbor Volcán de Fuego just five kilometers to the south. Unlike Fuego, it presents no active hazard and is a straightforward high-altitude trek rather than a technical climb, following a dirt track through pine forest to a radio-antenna installation near 4,000 metres before a final scramble to the true summit. Its severely eroded flanks and ash-and-lava deposits reaching tens of kilometres from the crater record a much older, more violent eruptive past than anything happening at Fuego today. As the higher and far more prominent of the pair, Nevado de Colima offers sweeping views across the volcanic complex and is the highest point in the state of Jalisco.
