Nanda Devi

Nanda Devi is the second-highest mountain in India and the highest peak located entirely within the country, rising within a ring of high summits known as the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. It briefly held the informal title of highest mountain climbed by humans after its 1936 first ascent, a record that stood until Annapurna was climbed in 1950. The entire inner Sanctuary, including the peak itself, has been closed to climbers and trekkers since 1983 to protect its fragile ecology, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
