Mount Wilhelm is the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea, rising from tropical rainforest through alpine grassland to a bare, often frosty summit despite lying only a few degrees south of the equator. It sits in the Bismarck Range and is climbed on a well-trodden but non-technical trail from the highland village of Keglsugl, usually as a night ascent timed to reach the summit for a clear dawn view. It was named in 1888 by German journalist Hugo Zöller after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck's family, and today is a modest but genuine trekking objective for visitors to PNG's Highlands.
