Mount Washington

The highest peak in the Northeastern United States and the most topographically prominent mountain east of the Mississippi, Mount Washington is legendary less for its modest 6,288-foot elevation than for hosting some of the most extreme weather ever recorded at a permanently staffed station, including a 231 mph wind gust that stood as the world surface record for 62 years. A summit weather observatory, a 19th-century cog railway, and an auto road bring huge numbers of visitors to the top, while Tuckerman Ravine below the summit is one of the birthplaces of American backcountry skiing.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
