Mount Tahan

Mount Tahan (Gunung Tahan) is the highest peak in Peninsular Malaysia and the second-highest mountain in Malaysia overall, after Mount Kinabalu in Borneo. It rises within Taman Negara, one of the world's oldest tropical rainforests, straddling the border of Pahang and Kelantan states along the Tahan Range. Unlike Kinabalu's exposed granite massif, Tahan is cloaked almost entirely in dense dipterocarp and montane forest, and the ascent — crossing dozens of river fords and low hills before breaking into mossy highland terrain near the summit — is considered one of the toughest treks in Peninsular Malaysia. Local Orang Asli and Kelantanese folklore holds that giant ape spirits guard magical wells on the mountain, which is also known locally as Gunung Rotan or Gunung Siam.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
