Mount Sir Donald is the signature peak of Rogers Pass, a knife-edged pyramid of remarkably sound Selkirk gneiss whose classic Matterhorn-like shape dominates the view from the Trans-Canada Highway. Its Northwest Arete is one of the most celebrated moderate alpine rock routes in North America, prized for clean exposed climbing on solid rock rather than the loose, vegetated terrain typical of many Selkirk objectives. First climbed in 1890 by Swiss alpinists Emil Huber and Carl Sulzer during the pioneering era of Canadian Pacific Railway mountaineering, it became a proving ground for generations of climbers based out of Rogers Pass and the historic Glacier House hotel. The Selkirks' notoriously heavy, wet snowpack makes the mountain and its approaches serious avalanche terrain outside the short summer climbing window.
