Mount Semeru (Gunung Semeru), also called Mahameru, is the highest mountain on the island of Java and one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, rising to 3,676 m within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java. Its name derives from Mount Meru of Hindu cosmology, the mythical axis of the universe, and Javanese and Balinese Hindus regard it as an earthly abode of Shiva. Semeru has been in near-constant eruption since 1967, typically producing small ash and gas emissions from its Jonggring Saloko crater every 15-30 minutes, punctuated by larger explosive eruptions — including a deadly pyroclastic-flow eruption in December 2021 that killed dozens and displaced thousands, with further eruptive activity as recently as November 2025. Because of this ongoing hazard, the true summit has repeatedly been placed off-limits to hikers in recent years, with access often restricted to the scenic Ranu Kumbolo lake camp well below the crater, and the entire trail network closed outright during active eruptive episodes.
