Mount Rogers is Virginia's highest point, a broad, tree-covered summit in the Blue Ridge's Mount Rogers National Recreation Area that offers an easy, scenic high-elevation hike rather than a technical climb. The approach through Grayson Highlands State Park crosses open, grassy balds roamed by a well-known herd of wild ponies before entering the shaded, high-elevation Fraser fir and red spruce forest — the northernmost stand of this Southern Appalachian spruce-fir ecosystem — that cloaks the true summit. The mountain also preserves rare evidence of Proterozoic-age glaciation, making it as geologically distinctive as it is scenic.

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
