Mount Nyiragongo is an active stratovolcano in Virunga National Park holding one of the largest and most persistent lava lakes on Earth, within a crater roughly 2 km across. Its unusually fluid, low-silica lava can race downhill at up to 100 km/h, and eruptions in 1977 and 2002 each killed dozens to hundreds of people and displaced tens of thousands. As of this research, the volcano sits deep inside territory controlled by the M23 armed group, and access for tourism/research has been severely restricted since 2024 — verify current conditions before treating it as an active hiking destination.
