Mount Moran

Mount Moran is the great glaciated giant of the northern Teton Range, a massive dark prow of rock capped by hanging ice that rises nearly 6,000 vertical feet directly above Jackson Lake with almost no foothills to soften the rise. Unlike its famous neighbor the Grand Teton, Moran sees no maintained trail: reaching its base typically means paddling a canoe across String and Leigh Lakes before bushwhacking up steep, unmarked drainages to a high camp. Its two classic routes — the CMC Route on sound, low-fifth-class rock and the more committing Skillet Glacier route up a hanging ice sheet on the east face — both demand real alpine climbing skill, glacier travel, and self-sufficiency far from rescue. The mountain's brooding profile has become one of the most photographed backdrops in the American West even though relatively few visitors ever set foot on it.

How we verified this

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.

Photography via Wikimedia Commons under its respective licences — the same sourcing standard as the resort photos elsewhere on the site.
