Mount Mitchell is the highest point in the Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in the contiguous United States east of the Mississippi River, rising in North Carolina's Black Mountains. Unlike most summits with a genuine climb, it's largely road-accessible via the Blue Ridge Parkway, with a short paved path leading most visitors to an observation deck — though a real multi-mile backcountry trail also climbs the peak for hikers wanting more of a challenge. The mountain is named for Elisha Mitchell, a UNC science professor who died in a fall while returning to verify his own measurements of the peak's height.

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
