Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest peak and the dramatic centerpiece of Arusha National Park, its horseshoe-shaped caldera the result of a massive summit collapse thousands of years ago. Rising sharply from the savanna, it offers a spectacular non-technical trek past forest thick with buffalo, giraffe and colobus monkeys to an exposed, narrow summit ridge. Many climbers use it as an acclimatization warm-up before attempting nearby Kilimanjaro.
