Mount Kenya is Africa's second-highest peak, its jagged twin summits of Batian and Nelion rising in dramatic contrast to the smooth volcanic cone of Kilimanjaro further south. Despite sitting almost astride the Equator, its upper slopes still carry glacial ice and see genuine alpine rock and ice climbing. Most visitors instead trek to the third summit, Point Lenana, on well-trodden routes through striking Afro-alpine moorland, while Batian itself demands technical climbing.
