Mount Katahdin is Maine's highest peak and the dramatic northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, its knife-edged ridgeline rising abruptly above the surrounding North Woods. Its Penobscot name means roughly 'the greatest mountain,' and the peak holds deep spiritual significance to the Wabanaki peoples. Thru-hikers finishing the 2,190-plus-mile Appalachian Trail traditionally touch the wooden sign atop Baxter Peak in an emotional final ascent.
