Mount Hermon is the highest peak of the Anti-Lebanon range and one of the most politically sensitive summits on Earth: its true summit straddles the Syria–Lebanon border near the point where Israeli-controlled territory also meets, and it has been fought over repeatedly since 1967. Long venerated in Canaanite, Israelite, and later Christian tradition — it hosted 'the highest temple of the ancient world' (Qasr Antar) and appears throughout the Hebrew Bible — the mountain today is split between a UN buffer zone/military-controlled true summit and a lower Israeli-administered shoulder that hosts a small ski resort and nature reserve near the town of Neve Ativ.
