Mount Emei

Mount Emei is the highest of the Four Sacred Mountains of Chinese Buddhism, rising to 3,099 meters above the western rim of the Sichuan Basin near Leshan. Traditionally revered as the place of enlightenment of the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra (Puxian), it is home to the site of the first Buddhist temple built in China, in the 1st century CE, and today carries 76 monasteries dating mainly from the Ming and Qing dynasties, their architecture adapted to the mountain's steep terrain. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 for both cultural and natural criteria, Emei also shelters roughly 100 endemic plant species and about 2,300 recorded animal species, including the Tibetan macaques that are a well-known presence along the upper trails. The main pilgrim footpath running to the Jinding (Golden Summit) temples at 3,077 meters is about 50 km long and traditionally took several days to walk, though a cable car now carries most visitors up the final stretch. This is a wholly distinct mountain from the Taoist Five Great Mountains — Mount Tai and Hua Shan among them — and from Huangshan; Emei belongs to a separate, Buddhist classification of sacred peaks.

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
