Mount Elbert is the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains and the second-highest summit in the contiguous United States after Mount Whitney. A broad, gentle giant of the Sawatch Range, it draws thousands of hikers each summer who reach its rounded summit on a well-graded trail rather than technical terrain. Its close elevation rivalry with neighboring Mount Massive once spawned a 19th-century height-boosting stone-pile feud between local boosters.

Elevation, prominence, coordinates and first-ascent facts are checked against published references and official sources. Where a fact isn't clearly documented, we show it as unknown rather than estimate.
