Mount Bromo is an active somma volcano in East Java's Tengger massif, sitting inside the vast Tengger caldera and famous for its smoking crater rising out of the flat, ash-grey "Sea of Sand." Named for Brahma, the Hindu god of creation, it is the spiritual center of the Tenggerese people, who make annual offerings into the crater during the Yadnya Kasada ceremony. Despite not being the highest peak in its own massif, it is Indonesia's most-visited volcano, drawing crowds for sunrise views from surrounding viewpoints, and it lies within Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park alongside the much higher Mount Semeru.
