Mauna Loa is Earth's largest active volcano by mass and volume, a massive shield volcano that forms much of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi and rises more than 9 km from the surrounding seafloor. Its gently sloped summit holds the Mokuʻāweoweo caldera and sits barely 38 m lower than neighboring Mauna Kea. Most of the mountain lies within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and while it remains an active, closely monitored volcano — it last erupted in late 2022 — it has been quiet since, and its summit trail remains a demanding but non-technical high-altitude hike.
