Known as the "Queen of the Dolomites," Marmolada is the range's highest peak and carries its largest glacier on a broad, gentle northern flank while dropping away on the south into the 600-1,000m limestone "Silver Wall" laced with over 180 climbing routes. It was the scene of brutal high-altitude trench warfare between Austria-Hungary and Italy in World War I, including the 1916 avalanche that entombed roughly 270 soldiers, and today it draws skiers, via ferrata climbers, and big-wall alpinists in roughly equal measure. In July 2022 a serac collapse on the shrinking glacier killed 11 hikers, a stark reminder that even the mountain's easiest route crosses active glacial terrain.
