Makalu is the fifth-highest mountain on Earth, a strikingly isolated four-sided pyramid straddling the Nepal-China border in the Mahalangur Himalaya just east of Everest. Its remote Barun Valley approach and a technically demanding summit ridge give it a reputation as one of the more serious, less crowded 8000m objectives, drawing climbers who have already proven themselves on an easier giant.
