The fourth-highest mountain in the world, Lhotse forms the southern anchor of the great horseshoe-shaped Everest massif, joined to its far more famous neighbour by the South Col. Its standard route shares much of its lower approach — including the notorious Khumbu Icefall — with the Everest South Col route before breaking away up the immense Lhotse Face and the narrow Reiss Couloir to the summit.
