La Malinche is a dormant stratovolcano straddling the Puebla-Tlaxcala border, the sixth-highest peak in Mexico and a favored non-technical acclimatization climb for mountaineers preparing for nearby Pico de Orizaba or Iztaccíhuatl. Its standard trail from a vacation resort at over 3,000 m is a strenuous but straightforward high-altitude hike rather than a technical climb, gaining over 1,300 m to a broad, forested-to-alpine summit. The mountain has held deep cultural significance since long before its Spanish-colonial name, originally known to the Tlaxcaltec people as Matlalcueitl, a rain and song goddess.
