Königstein crowns the Brandberg Massif, a vast granite dome that erupts abruptly from the flat gravel plains of Namibia's Namib Desert, and it is the highest point in Namibia. The Brandberg is one of Africa's most important rock-art sites, its ravines sheltering thousands of San paintings — including the famous 'White Lady' panel — and its upper slopes preserve a relict stand of wild olive found nowhere else on the mountain. Reaching the summit is a serious desert undertaking rather than a technical climb: a long, waterless scramble up granite river valleys such as the Ga'aseb from the small town of Uis. Because of the massif's cultural and archaeological significance, a guide is strongly advised for any approach.
